Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels has raised far more money in the first three months of the year than the Democrats vying for their party's gubernatorial nomination. New campaign finance reports show that Daniels raised $1.5 million between Jan. 1 and March 31. Democrat Jim Schellinger raised about $511,000 during that period and former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson collected $470,000. Daniels has raised a total of more than $8.3 million and had nearly $5.3 million on hand at the end of March. The new reports show that Schellinger has raised a total of $2.3 million. He had about $715,000 on hand at the end of March. Long Thompson has raised $907,000 total and had $484,000 on hand. ### |

A state database detailing agency spending is now online. The Web site, created by Gov. Mark Sanford in an executive order, lists itemized agency spending by month, as well as year-to-date agency spending by categories of spending. The site, at https://ssl.sc.gov/SpendingTransparency, is available to the public and the data can be downloaded. For instance, according to the database, the Lieutenant Governor's office reported $1,782 of in-state mileage for its employees in October. The report also shows how much each employee received for mileage. Expenses on the site are broken-down according to the source of the funding, whether General Fund, an earmark or federal money. "We've long believed that transparency is key to voters' ability to hold government accountable for the decisions it makes," Sanford said, in a press release. "This new site is all about providing another tool for our citizens to have the maximum amount of information in terms of how their government operates and how their tax dollars are being spent. I want to thank the Comptroller General and the folks over at sc.gov for their work on this front, and I'd urge every agency to do more in making more of this information available." ### |
Republican Governors Association (RGA) Chairman Governor Rick Perry today announced a new annual dinner fundraising record: $10.6 million. The event, “A Celebration of America’s Leaders,” will be held tonight at the National Building Museum. “RGA’s continuing to build momentum after winning two out of three races last year and outraising the Democrats by an almost two-to-one margin,” said Governor Rick Perry. “Governor Sanford, the Dinner Chairman, and Governor Barbour, our Finance Chairman, have done an outstanding job.” “Governors are some of the most successful and popular leaders in our Party,” said Governor Mark Sanford. “We worked hard to support the RGA Gala because we recognize how important RGA and governors are to the future of the Party and our country.” RGA headed into 2008 with $9.23 million cash on hand, an increase of $8.26 million over the amount it had four years ago at the same point in the election cycle. In 2007, RGA reported raising $21.59 million for the year, an increase of $5.61 million from what it raised in 2003 and more than $13 million more than the $8.59 million it raised in 1999. “Our fundraising results show that RGA’s four year plan is working,” said RGA Executive Director Nick Ayers. “Donors are investing in a long-term plan to win back the majority of governorships by 2011. They recognize the importance of governors.” There are 11 gubernatorial races in 2008, 2 in 2009, and 36 in 2010. ### |
