The Republican Governors Association congratulates Luis Fortuño on his historic election tonight. Fortuño won in a landside and is the first Republican Governor to win election in Puerto Rico since 1969 and becomes the second Republican to win the Governorship in Puerto Rico since 1949. The last Republican Governor of Puerto Rico was Luis A. Ferre. “Luis Fortuño made history today by becoming the first Republican elected Governor in Puerto Rico in a generation,” said RGA chairman Nick Ayers. “Representative Fortuño is the type of leader the GOP needs to grow the party.” Rep. Fortuño also made history in 2005 when he was the first Republican elected to Congress from Puerto Rico. In Congress, Fortuño was elected Vice-President of his Freshman Class and was unanimously elected to serve as Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Conference. Rep. Fortuño is also a member of the House Republican Policy Committee. ### |

The elections of Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. and Governor John Hoeven ensure that every incumbent Republican Governor won tonight by wide margins. Earlier tonight Governor Daniels and Governor Douglas dominated races that were targeted by national Democrats. The success of Republican Governors at the polls offers a bright spot for the GOP, and their victories tonight show their importance to the Republican Party’s future. “Republican Governors prove that when we govern well and stick to our principles the nation still supports the Republican Party,” said RGA Chairman Governor Rick Perry. “The plan that Republican Governors developed two years ago is working. Next week the Governors will expand on their plan and bring fresh leadership and new ideas to the GOP. Tonight’s results show how important Republican Governors are to the Republican Party moving forward.” “When Republicans focus on solving problems we can win in any environment,” said RGA Executive Director Nick Ayer’s. “It’s now time to focus on rebuilding our Party at the state level — not in Washington DC — and our governors are poised to do so.” ### |
The Republican Governors Association congratulates Governor Mitch Daniels for winning reelection tonight. Governor Daniels garnered a convincing victory despite running in a state targeted by national Democrats. Barack Obama spent millions of dollars trying to win the state and labor unions spent nearly a million dollars trying to defeat Governor Daniels. Yesterday, the Democratic Governors Association said Indiana was a race to watch. “The RGA committed early resources to this race and our strategy paid off,” said RGA Chairman Governor Rick Perry. “The convincing victory by a Republican Governor in a state targeted by Democrats shows clearly that Republican Governors are positioned to lead the Party.” The Republican Governors Association invested over $1 million in Governor Daniels’ race to ensure a resounding victory. “The election of Governor Daniels shows that problem-solving Republicans can win in any environment,” said RGA Executive Director Nick Ayers. “The Indiana voters rewarded Governor Daniels for his stewardship of the state over the past four years.” ### |
The 2008 election could be the worst in a generation for Republicans, with the White House slipping away and heavy losses predicted in the Senate and the House. Looking for a bright spot? Look no further than two governor's races, in Washington state and North Carolina. In each, the Republican candidates have successfully snatched the "change" mantle from the Democratic candidates, and polls show both states are the truest of tossups. In Washington, former state senator Dino Rossi (R) is back for a rematch against Gov. Christine Gregoire (D), to whom he lost by 129 votes after a series of contested recounts in 2004. The race has been tied since the Republican announced his second candidacy, and strategists on both sides acknowledge that it could go either way with a week remaining before the vote. Working in Rossi's favor is Gregoire's long résumé in politics -- three terms as state attorney general before being elected governor, disadvantages in this year's hostile climate -- and some sense of buyer's remorse among the Washington state electorate. Working for Gregoire is the strong Democratic wind in the state and the power of incumbency. In North Carolina, the departure of Democratic Gov. Mike Easley, term-limited out of office, seemed to open the door for his lieutenant governor, Bev Perdue, to step into the governor's mansion. But Republicans smartly nominated Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, a business-minded, pragmatic politician who has successfully painted Perdue as a defender of the status quo. A recent Civitas Institute poll showed Perdue and McCrory knotted at 43 percent, with the Libertarian candidate receiving 2 percent. Although Republicans could be on the ascent in Washington and North Carolina, not all the news on the gubernatorial front is good. In Missouri, Attorney General Jay Nixon (D) is swamping Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R) in the open seat race to replace retiring Republican Gov. Matt Blunt. ### |
This morning the Chairman of the Republican Governors Association, Governor Rick Perry, and the Chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, Governor Joe Manchin, released a joint letter to Congress urging them to pass an economic recovery package. The full text of it is below: As leaders of our respective organizations, we don't always see eye to eye on policy, but we come together today with one clear purpose. We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package. We both believe that it’s time to stand together for our country. There is a time for partisanship and there is a time for getting things done. No one likes the hand they've been dealt, and now is not the time to assign blame. It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible and do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy. This economic crisis is not just impacting Wall Street; it is also making life harder for everyday Americans. Americans across the country and in every demographic are feeling the pinch. If Congress does not act soon, the situation will grow appreciably worse. It's time for leadership. Congress needs to act now. ### |
